Clearwater

Across the border in Idaho the Clearwater National Forest closed the area of the Big Burn. The stateline trail tracing the Montana/Idaho from Lolo Pass to Lookout Pass was closed, then reopened in earlier this year after the Forest Service settled a lawsuit with the Blue Ribbon Coalition. The trail and the Big Burn is again threatened with closure as part of the Clearwater Forest Plan.
Heart Lake may be in the Lolo National Forest. but the best access requires riding the endangered Stateline trail.
